I see this place as a direct competition to Yard House across the entry to the newly remodeled Shoppes at Carlsbad shopping mall. Wokcano is a large and beautifully decorated Asian fusion eatery that serves everything from Japanese sushi to Chinese Kung Pao.
Across the path is classic rock playing through the Yard House’s notoriously good sound system while they serve from around 100 handles of select beers at their large and full bar. Wokcano had 90’s styled alternative rock playing through a good sound system and some really great decor to keep you amused, but only had maybe 10 handles of draft beer in its much smaller bar area supporting the very large dining area. I asked if the genre of music was their continuous genre, because I liked it; but was told that the genre rotated through classic rock, oldies, several other genre and even Electronica. I guess that’s fine as long as it’s not annoying and obnoxiously loud; especially if it’s something that is just annoying . . . like techno. The sound level today was perfect for the lunchtime crowd of about 8 people total, and our group was four of that total. Seemed rather empty for a Saturday.
The food at Wokcano reminded me of cuisine similar in creativity and flavorfulness to Pei Wei, a sister restaurant to PF Chang’s, but those have mostly closed in our area; and to go along with the shareable serving sizes here at Wokcano, they also served a full sushi menu.
Wokcano was decent. They seemed to have several TVs for watching the big game, but nothing like Yard House. I don’t know that my future office party or executive lunch meeting would be here at Wokcano, but it is a nice place. Food was acceptable, hot, flavorful and plentiful; Wokcano is just not my bowl of rice.
