I had decided that it was time to fulfill my fried chicken desires and head to KFC, mostly because it was along the way to our destination this evening; and because I owed it to myself to give their new hot wings a try after seeing The Colonel, or whomever was standing in for ‘him’, and advertising the Colonel’s new products.
I repeated the wife’s order of a 3-piece meal box (comes with two sides and a biscuit) with all dark meat (two thighs and a leg); but instead of the original crust, I got the extra crispy crust and I also ordered a 6-piece order of their Nashville Hot wings. Even my wife asked, “You’re getting hot wings?”
I had recently announced my selection of the “very best” hot wings can be found at Rocco’s Little Chicago in Tucson, AZ. My son had recommended Rocco’s as their wings came coated with a remarkable sauce that had also worked perfectly for dipping the crust from their awesome pizza. Ever since, I have been ordering to compare hot wings at every pizza joint if they have been available, mostly so I can compare apples to apples; or in this case, pizza and wings to pizza and wings.
KFC has been advertising their hot wings for a few months in our area. I really had no crazy desire to try them; after all, KFC was known for their Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). I thought to myself that hot wings are a bar food, and the kind of stuff that makes college kids happy at places like Wings and Things along with other types of finger foods served at football watching parties. I thought to myself, “why would anyone go to KFC for hot wings?” “KFC is known for its fried chicken, not hot wings”, as I again thought to myself. I’m now guessing that was the same conversation KFC had in their board room when they said, “why not?”.
What KFC is now doing with their hot wings is something that could change the way anyone looks at KFC; kinda like the new image of their building. KFC seems to be changing the way people are looking at them. A new look and new Hot Wings.
I ordered six pieces of the Nashville Hot chicken wings. I had looked at the flavor offerings of their wings. I had un-sauced, Buffalo, Honey BBQ (which I really dislike) and Nashville Hot from which to choose. I had recently eaten at a BBQ place and on their menu was a Nashville Hot chicken sandwich. I remember the chicken that night, that someone else had ordered, was flavorful but certainly not too spicy.
So today I decided on the KFC Nashville Hot Chicken Wings; I figured I would give ‘em a try. First all, they came out super hot (temperature), enough to pick a wing up and put it right back down, like they just came out of the fryer. They were coated with just the right amount of Nashville Hot sauce to coat them thoroughly and have a small puddle in the bottom of the ‘to-go’ container, as we ate inside but anticipated taking home our leftovers. Since I also ordered a three-piece meal, I had a biscuit (I normally only eat a bite or two of the biscuit) to mop up the delectable sauce that was now pooled on the bottom. The wings were a decent size, crunchy, hot, with a sweet/spicy flavor that beckoned every morsel of my biscuit. I think that’s the first time I had ever finished a KFC biscuit. I even grabbed a chunk of my wife’s biscuit (that sounds wrong)l.
KFC Kentucky Fried Nashville Hot Wings have earned them an easy ‘second place’ and the CritDicks coveted 🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆 five eggplant rating. A must try.
